5 Tips for Designing Your Dream Home

No matter what your dream home looks like, small and charming, or large and prominent, this is your time to put those dreams to paper! This can be an overwhelming process and you may be wondering where to start. We have 5 tips to help you do just that!

1. "Settle" on your dream house vision

No, we don’t mean settle for something you may not actually want, but before you can go anywhere with your dream house, you need to settle on what your dream house vision really is. When you think about your dream house, what do you see? Talk to your family, what do they envision? It may include a state-of-the-art kitchen and lots of closet space, or a state-of-the-art entertainment system and extra garage space for a car collection. The first thing you'll have to do is settle on what your dream house should be. How many square feet of living space do you need? How many bedrooms and baths? Is your style contemporary or traditional? Once you decide on the basics, you can start designing your dream house.

2. Start designing!

Until you get those ideas down on paper, it will be hard for anyone to understand your vision, even you! You can start with a simple floor plan design on paper, or use an online source like www.eplans.com or http://www.dreamhomesource.com. Start thinking about how you want your house to be laid out; do you want the laundry on the main floor or next to the bedrooms on the 2nd floor? It used to be that you needed an architect to make this step happen, but with a little creativity and some online tools, you can get the process started in no time.

3. Don’t forget about the future

While you know what your needs are right now, but don’t forget about what you might need in the future. If this is your forever home, you might want a bedroom on the main floor so you have that option when stairs are cumbersome. Think about where you might need extra storage as your family grows or how much entertaining space is important for holidays and celebrations. Keeping your future in mind during the early design stages will ensure that your dream home stays your dream home for many generations to come.

4. Look around

Get in as many homes as you can that are similar to what you see as your dream home. Look for local builder showcases or open houses that give you an opportunity to walk through finished homes. Ask your builder if they have homes you can tour. Take notes about what you like or don’t like. If you see something you really like, ask if you can take a few pictures, most people won’t mind. If they aren’t comfortable with pictures, go back to your notes and be as detailed as possible. Walking through homes is the best way to understand how they look and feel to you and your family before you begin building your own.

5. Location, location, location

No matter how perfect or beautiful your home may be; the location of your home is the most important feature. Where you decide to place your dream home will be the host of your memories and traditions for many years to come. Think about schools, recreation opportunities, and access to entertainment and fun! Wyndham Hills offers a sanctuary to host your dream home while providing easy access to plenty of entertainment and high quality education. Hastings, MN is a community that is guaranteed to offer plenty of memory making with amenities like 33 parks and 28 miles of one of the most scenic trail systems in the metro area. The education system includes the Hastings Public Schools which offers a comprehensive educational program in three elementary schools, the award-winning Hastings Middle School, and the state-of-the-art Hastings High School.

Starting with these 5 tips will get you on your way to living in your dream home and the memory making can begin!
